QUALITY IS OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLE

ABOUT US

Our Company

Seal Cool Industries (SCI) is a privately owned business, which today is a leading plastic profile manufacturer in Africa. We endeavour to continually produce high-quality products (plastic extrusions and injection moulding) by using the latest product design, manufacturing equipment and processing methods. We offer solutions from conceptualisation stage, prototyping, and tool building to series production.

For the past 25 years, we have strived to become the market leader in polymer solutions in Southern Africa whilst ensuring an environment that is safe for our employees and products that are complete solutions for our customers. Our drive is to offer only products that are environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Quality is our guiding principle. This applies to our products and our support service. We ensure that we respond to the requirements of our customers and develop products with a competitive edge. This is based on our many years of technical expertise in polymer processing.

We see ourselves as a partner for our customers, who can benefit from our expert knowledge and service-oriented team. SCI is an independent and reliable partner for customers in multiple industry segments.

SCI is ISO 9001:2008 certified.

Our History

SCI (Seal Cool Industries) was founded in 1992 for the extrusion and manufacture of flexible PVC refrigerator door seals (“gaskets”) but soon outgrew its origins. The company expanded its manufacturing base and the production capability to include both rigid and flexible extrusions.

In 2001 the firms expansion had become such that the Lorenztville premises were inadequate to meet the required manufacturing capacity requirements so SCI moved into its existing premises in Southdale, Johannesburg. The production capabilities were vertically extended to include polymer material mixing and compounding at the new facility. This gave the company a strong base to expand its product range to cost-effectively include commercial appliances, outdoor construction, plumbing, sanitary ware and the flooring products. Throughout these periods of expansion, SCI retained many of its original customers illustrating the ability to form strong business relationships with customers.

Today SCI remains a South African-based polymer processor that supplies a diverse range of customers throughout the African continent and special export markets. The focus of the company still remains true to its founding focus namely plastic extrusion and plastic injection moulding. Our core values are innovation, independence, flexibility of supply, quality products and personal service.

SCI is a global supplier that offers its customers:

PRODUCT DESIGN

Product design is the efficient and effective generation and development of ideas through a process that leads to new products. The SCI technical team is focused on understanding customers’ ideas and requirements and utilising its own expertise and experience to find satisfactory cost effective solutions culminating in full commercialisation.

Our team of design and technical engineers has over 25 years of experience with an array of profile extrusions. SCI has a fully integrated computer-aided design system that enables us to offer customers a class-leading plastic-extrusion and injection-moulding design service.

RAW MATERIALS

PVC is a linear or branched polymer with little or no cross-linking. It is a thermoplastic material, which flows easily when heated and can be moulded into a variety of shapes.

PVC comes in two basic forms: rigid (sometimes abbreviated as RPVC) and flexible. The rigid form of PVC is used in construction for pipe and in profile applications such as doors and windows. It can be made softer and more flexible by the addition of plasticisers, the most widely used being phthalates.

In this form, it is also used in plumbing, electrical cable insulation, imitation leather, signage, inflatable products, and many applications where it replaces rubber.

ABS plastics are used largely for mechanical purposes due to its impact resistance and toughness. ABS's light weight and ability to be injection moulded and extruded make it useful in manufacturing products such as automotive trim components, automotive bumpers, enclosures for electrical and electronic assemblies, joinery panels, and small kitchen appliances. Household and consumer goods are the major applications of ABS.

Polycarbonates used in engineering are strong, tough materials, and some grades are optically transparent. Polycarbonate is a durable material. Although it has high impact-resistance, it has low scratch-resistance. They are easily worked, moulded, and thermoformed. Because of these properties, polycarbonates find many applications.

Nylon 6 fibres are tough, possessing high tensile strength, as well as elasticity and lustre. They are wrinkleproof and highly resistant to abrasion and chemicals such as acids and alkalis. The fibres can absorb up to 2.4% of water, although this lowers tensile strength. is widely used for gears, fittings and bearings, in automotive industry for under-the-hood parts, and as a material for power tools housings.

HDPE is known for its large strength-to-density ratio. It is used in a variety of applications, ranging from fuel tanks in motor vehicles, bottle tanks and water pipes.

LDPE has weaker intermolecular forces than HDPE, its tensile strength is also lower, but its resilience is higher. LDPE is widely used for manufacturing various containers, dispensing bottles, wash bottles, tubing, plastic bags for computer components, and various moulded laboratory equipment.

PP is rugged and unusually resistant to many chemical solvents, bases and acids. Polypropylene is normally tough and flexible. This allows PP to be used as an engineering plastic, competing with materials such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). Polypropylene is reasonably economical.

Polypropylene is most commonly used for plastic mouldings but also medical or laboratory equipment can be made from polypropylene because it withstands the heat in an autoclave. Its heat resistance also enables it to be used as the manufacturing material of consumer-grade kettles.

Barium ferrite (BaFe) is a highly magnetic material, with a high packing density, and is a metal oxide. It has found popularity recently with its use in fridge magnets etc.

TOOL DESIGN & MANUFACTURING

The advanced tool room includes two flagship Agie Charmiles wire cutters which enable SCI to wire cut complex geometries with tight tolerances and fine surfaces finishes. SCI only uses high-grade German steel, ensuring all tools manufactured have a maximum lifespan and the highest quality and dimensional consistency.

Our experience, combined with continuous research, development and investment, means that SCI is at the forefront of tooling for custom extrusions profiles. Art and science are thoroughly intermixed at SCI and our team of designers, manufacturing engineers and tool and die makers work in close consultation as part of a manufacturing engineering team.

SCIs is part of an international network that allows the customer to access specialised tooling from Europe as well as the Far East.

COMMISSIONING

SCI’s service starts with design and tooling but does not end there. Quality first-off samples during the commissioning process is part of the product development cycle. SCI has a proud heritage of commissioning tooling with industry leading standards ensuring customer satisfaction.

PRODUCTION

SCI has an enviable reputation for short lead-times and a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) to support customer requirements. FMS is a manufacturing system in which there is some flexibility that allows the system to react to changes, whether predicted or unpredicted. Machine flexibility enables SCI’s production system to be changed to produce new product types, and it has the ability to change the order of operations executed on a part. Routing flexibility enables SCI to use multiple machines to perform the same operation on a part, as well as the system's ability to absorb large-scale changes, such as in volume, capacity, or capability.

The main advantages of SCI’s FMS is its high flexibility in managing resources such as time and effort to manufacture a new product.

Customised solutions such as specialised packaging, labelling and certificates of compliance can be provided upon customer request.

DELIVERY

Whether the customers' requirement is for a JIT (Just-in-Time) service with an EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) interface, or simply for a specialised courier service for an emergency delivery, the SCI team supports every request. SCI is the Plastic Extrusion Manufacturer.
